One of the most eventful nights of the season has been spoiled by visiting intruders for a number of Greater Rome teams this year.

With alumni in attendance and the announcement of who will be the queen, five local teams have had their homecoming games spoiled so far this season.

Armuchee, Pepperell, Rome, Rockmart and Sonoraville all have been handed losses on their respective homecoming nights.

Sonoraville became the most recent casualty of the trend Friday when Dade County beat the Phoenix 41-15. The Wolverines had already upset Rockmart, 7-6, at the Jackets’ homecoming.

Armuchee’s homecoming ended with a loss to Chattooga and then Armuchee turned around and defeated Pepperell on their homecoming night.

The Dragons then came out on the other end of the spectrum by shutting out Temple in their homecoming game on Friday.

Weather woes

As severe weather moved through Northwest Georgia Friday evening, several games were delayed causing players to go later into the night than usual.

Rome High’s Region 7-AAAA North contest at Murray County, as well as the Region 7-AA North matchups between Adairsville and Gordon Central, and Sonoraville and Dade County were all halted due to lightning delays.

Pepperell’s game at Temple was halted for some time due to inclement weather and the much-hyped face-off between No. 1 Calhoun and No. 9 Chattooga ran into a few more problems than just lightning.

Heavy rains swamped Little Big Horn in Summerville and a power outage at the stadium just before halftime delayed the game even more.

Text message mishap

Facing Coosa in a key 7-AA contest in Rockmart, the host Yellow Jackets fell behind, 12-0, at halftime.

Many miles away, some Rockmart fans were led to believe the halftime deficit was far worse than that.

At the Region 7-AA softball tournament in Adairsville, a collection of Rockmart fans were incorrectly informed that the Jackets were trailing Coosa 42-0 at the half.

The erroneous score — which was caused by a misread text message — was spread around the complex and created some undue worry for the Jacket backers, who eventually learned that Rockmart had actually posted an 18-12 win.

Meanwhile, the Rockmart softball team won the 7-AA title, beating Dade County in the finals.
