Rogers named GSWA AA Offensive Player of the Year

The Georgia commit was named the Georgia Sports Writers Association Class AA Offensive Player of the Year on Thursday. The senior amassed more than 1,600 receiving yards this season with the Yellow Jackets, who went 14-1 and made a trip to the Georgia Dome for the Class AA state championship game.
Meanwhile, a strong senior season for Lassiter’s Hutson Mason helped pave the way for a college career.
Heading into the Class AAAAA playoffs he did not have a scholarship offer from any big-time BCS school.
That quickly changed after a new Georgia High School single-game passing record 552-yard, eight touchdown performance against South Gwinnett in the second round. In one week’s time he received offers from Georgia, Florida State, Mississippi State and Virginia.
The big game against the Comets capped a season in which, Mason threw for 4,560 yards and 54 touchdowns, both new state records. He completed 313 of 432 passes (72.3 percent) and only threw 10 interceptions.
On Tuesday, Mason committed to the University of Georgia, and now when he heads to campus, he can say he is the 2009 Georgia Sportswriters Association All-Classification Player of the Year.
“It is really an honor,” Mason said. “I never dreamed I would pass for 54 touchdowns in a year. After last year we lost our entire offensive line we were like, ‘How are we going to do this?’”
It did take Lassiter a few games for the offensive line to gel, but after it did, Mason went to work.
For the year, the Trojans averaged more than 37 points a game en route to a 12-1 record, the first undefeated season in school history and a trip to the state quarterfinals. Over the second half of the season the it jumped to 47 points per game, and Mason finished with averages of 350 yards and four touchdowns a game.
While surprised with the actual numbers, Mason said it was a consistent performance he had been working for and allowed him to take his most recent accolade in stride.
“It is the kind of award I wanted to get,” Mason said.
“After last year (3,705 yards passing, 28 touchdowns in being the AP Class AAAAA Offensive Player of the Year) I felt like if I improved like I wanted I would have a chance. “It was definitely a lot of hard work in the film room and practice.”
Lassiter coach Chip Linsdey said there was little doubt Mason had accomplished what he set out to do.
“He could have won the most improved award on our team,” Lindsey said.
Mason will have one other opportunity to give all his new Bulldog fans one more chance to see him as a high school player. He will suit up next week as a member of the North team in the annual North-South All-Star Game in Columbus.
“Its going to be a blast,” he said. “Looking at the roster the teams are stacked. Everywhere you look you see recruits going to Georgia, Georgia Tech, Florida, Clemson and Kentucky.” And in true quarterback mode, he added, “As long as we dont run the Wing-T we’ll be fine.”
