Football: Jackets to face first-time foes this season
Team practice will begin on Aug. 2 and continue for two full weeks before the Jackets test themselves in a preseason scrimmage at Paulding County High School in Dallas.
Another two weeks of practice, uninterrupted by classes since school will not start until Sept. 7 this year, will conclude with the first game of the regular season as the Jackets host cross-county rival Cedartown on Aug. 27.
The Bulldogs will come into town under the lead of new head coach Scott Hendrix and will look to extend their two-game winning streak in the series.
A region realignment by the Georgia High School Association this past winter expanded Rockmart’s sports region to include four new teams.
The Jackets, part of Region 7-AA South, will play two crossover games with teams from the North subregion beginning on Sept. 3 with new school North Murray.
They will then travel to Calhoun the following week to take on Gordon Central for the first time in the two schools’ history.
A long trip and a tough challenge awaits Rockmart on Sept. 17 as the team makes the trek to Cumming to play Class 5A school West Forsyth in a non-region bout.
West Forsyth has only played two full seasons of varsity football but has made a mark going 14-6 during that time averaging 33.9 points per game.
The Jackets will then have their bye week and start off their subregion schedule by hosting Model on Oct. 1 for Homecoming before hitting the road to take on Pepperell and then Coosa.
Rockmart will then end the regular season with three home games beginning with Armuchee on Oct. 22 and then Adairsville on Oct. 29. A region play-in game will be held on Nov. 5 with the Jackets hosting a North subregion team.
