Moving forward: Region champs crowned, state awaits

The Sonoraville wrestling team made it a clean sweep by winning the Area 7-AA traditional tournament on Saturday with a score of 265 after winning the 7-AA Duals earlier in the season.

It was the second straight time the Phoenix have won the traditional tournament, and they had four individual champions on the day.

Sonoraville’s Ryan Bess took home the 160-pound title along with Andrew Bingiel (171), Zane Holder (189) and Aaron Hatch.

The Phoenix had 12 wrestlers qualify for sectionals, including two second-place and five third place finishers. Cody Kuhn (112) and Brandon McBee (140) both won silver, while Austin Williams (125), Richard Davis (130), Layson West (135), Jamie Phillips (152) and Tyler Smith (285) finished third.

Model finished third with 146.5 points behind second-place Dade County at 238.5.

The Blue Devils had seven wrestlers qualify for sectionals and also three alternates.

Model’s Branton Treglown (130) came in second along with Brad Nickerson (160).

Tyrell Turner (103) and Michael Flynn (112) each had third-place finishes for the Blue Devils.

Adairsville, Chattooga and Calhoun rounded out the top six.

Sectionals will begin next Friday hosted by Sonoraville at the Sonoraville Recreation Center and will run through Saturday.

Rome qualifies six for sectionals, finishes fifth at 7-AAAA area tourney

The Rome Wolves had two wrestlers win area championships and four more qualify for sectional bids this weekend at the 7-AAAA area tournament at Allatoona.

Immanuel Kerr-Brown finished first in the 135-pound weight class, and Randy Rhoden won at 171.

Austin Schaekel (112), Nicky Harbison (125), Mark Klasson (189) and Caleb Morang (215) all finished fourth to earn bids to sectionals.

The Wolves finished fifth in the team standings with 149 points.

Sectionals will begin next Friday at Upson-Lee.

Unity Christian’s Lansdell finishes as state runner-up

The Unity Christian Lions’ wrestling team sent six wrestlers to the GISA state traditional tournament this weekend with Luke Lansdell highlighting the results.

Lansdell wrestled for a state championship at 125, but came up a little short to finish as the state runner-up.

“Luke wrestled with all his heart,” said Unity wrestling coach Wes Rampley. “He gave 100 percent and didn’t leave anything on the mat.

“He represented our school well, and we’re proud of him.”
